We use PRGF to help treat hair loss and balding. The treatments enable us to stop hair loss in its tracks, encourage new hair growth cycles, and allow healthier, stronger hair to take root. That said, hair loss treatments are just one of several possible PRGF applications. The medical field uses these treatments to heal sports injuries as well; athletes report high success rates and rapid returns to physical activity.
An End to Hair Loss
Many people find themselves worried about hair loss and balding. We tend to think about balding as a men’s issue, but women suffer from it as well. For women, hair loss often leads to feelings of embarrassment and discomfort. Hair loss upends people’s sense of self-confidence and causes significant suffering. In many cases, people faced with the natural processes experienced by their bodies feel hopeless and resign themselves to simply living with their new normal.
That doesn’t have to be the case! There are presently several effective solutions that promote hair follicle growth and strengthening. These solutions allow men and women to tackle their hair thinning and loss, with exceptional results.
What is the Principle behind PRGF Treatments?
PRGF treatments are based on the activation of the body’s natural mechanisms, in order to accelerate healing and regeneration processes. During each treatment session, platelet-rich plasma drawn from the patient is injected back into the patient’s own body, promoting the tissue’s healing and regeneration. PRGF differs from other treatments in several ways. For instance, many spread external tinctures on the skin. These preparations contain vitamins and minerals that are important to hair health. While doing so is correct in theory, in practice, their ability to be absorbed by the patient’s tissue is far too limited; they aren’t actually able to significantly impact the final result.
Some People Turn to Hair Implants
Hair implants are costly and come with their fair share of side effects. What’s more, hair implants don’t tackle the root of the issue – the weakening of the patient’s existing hair follicles, and the lack of vascular activity in the surrounding tissue. PRGF treatments attack the problem, head-on. They encourage the entire area to regenerate in the form of blood vessels rebuilding themselves. This is extremely important, as they supply the hair follicles with the nutrients they need to grow. As a result, the hair follicles regenerate and strengthen, allowing the hair’s growth cycle to awaken from its dormant state.
Cleansing Growth Factor-rich Plasma
PRGF is based on PRP innovation, and precisely releases activated platelets containing growth factors into the scalp’s tissues. In the case of PRGF, the percentage of growth factors is significantly higher than in that of standard PRP, or even PRF. These growth factors are naturally found in the blood’s platelets, but the platelets must be cleansed, condensed, and activated, before they can be injected into the patient’s target areas.
PRGF Treatments Take Place as Follows:
- Blood is drawn from the patient – To cleanse the platelet-rich plasma, it must first be collected from the patient, in the form of 6 test tubes containing 9 ml of blood each, just like in a standard blood test at the doctor’s office; a small prick and it’s over before you know it.
- The blood is placed in a centrifuge – The separation of platelet-rich plasma takes place in an advanced centrifuge machine that rapidly spins the test tubes, and performs a series of steps, at varying speeds. As a result, the blood’s components separate from one another, creating layers of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelet-rich plasma, and platelet-poor plasma, within each test tube.
- The platelet-rich plasma layer is removed from the test tube (the layer that’s of interest to us).
- The platelets are activated – We then add calcium to the plasma to activate the platelets and growth factors of interest to us.
- The PRGF fluid is injected – We draw the fluid into a syringe and inject it into the patient’s target areas.
This cleansing process enables the separation of white blood cells, thereby preventing unwanted inflammatory activity from transpiring. The white blood cells are also rich in proteins that are used as important growth factors.
Important Things to Know about PGF Treatments
As mentioned above, PRGF treatments begin with a blood draw. That blood is then cleansed in a centrifuge, while the attending physician diagnoses the patient’s condition and determines which areas will be injected, and with how much of the fluid. The fluid is injected using a cannula, or thin needles.
Generally, a local anesthetic is applied, and the treatment is experienced as pain-free. Treatment sessions last approximately 30 minutes, after which the fluid immediately begins to act, launching biological processes that cause the target tissue to regenerate. To achieve the best possible result, it is recommended to undergo a series of three treatments, with three to six weeks of “rest” in between each session.
The fluid remains active in the patient’s body for up to a year, once the series of sessions is complete. That said, it is recommended to return for “maintenance” sessions, every 6-8 months, following the last session.
Note that results are not instant; the body needs time to build blood vessels and regenerate tissue. Results are generally seen after a month’s time. The hair follicles will strengthen, enabling stronger, healthier hair to grow. By the six-month mark, dormant hair follicles will awaken, and the patient will have visibly improved, more voluminous hair. Of course, results vary from patient to patient, and while research evidences high levels of success, not all patients will experience a significant change.
Are PRGF Treatments Safe?
Any treatment involving the injection of foreign substances into the body carries some risk of complications. One can never know how the body might respond to foreign substances invading its space. However, PRGF is a safe treatment, as the injected substance comes from the patient’s own blood and its natural derivatives.
Note that any treatment involving injections requires a sterile environment. The Israeli Ministry of Health has put out strict guidelines regarding treatments involving blood byproducts, which must be followed, to prevent complications and infections.
How Much Do PRGF Treatments Cost?
A single PRGF session costs 1,600 NIS. However, since a series of sessions is required, a three-session package can be purchased in advance, at a discounted rate of 4,000 NIS. While PRGF may seem more costly than PRP, the procedure is more complex, as it involves the cleansing of platelet-rich plasma, and its activation with calcium. It requires more time and steps, leading to its higher price – and enhanced results.
It’s also recommended to consider the cost of living the rest of your life with hair loss, as well as the potential cost of expensive and risky hair transplants. All things considered, PRGF is the most affordable and effective solution.
