Botox for Excessive Sweating

table of contents

Sweating is a natural body process, one that is essential to body temperature regulation. That said, some cases can be classified as excessive sweating and lead to discomfort, shame, and other issues. Botox is an accepted treatment for people suffering from excessive sweating. Many people can benefit from this treatment and avoid undergoing complex and risky medical procedures. Many people have already treated their excessive sweating with Botox injections, allowing them to experience significant improvements in their daily lives.

Sweat is secreted by the various glands within the skin. A significant concentration of sweat glands can be found in a person’s facial skin, reproductive organs, and underarms, among other parts of the body. Note that not all glands are created alike. The glands found in the face, otherwise known as eccrine sweat glands, mostly secrete water and salts, in order to regulate the body’s temperature. Conversely, apocrine sweat glands, like those found in the underarms, are tasked with the additional role of secreting oily substances.

Foul body odor is often linked to sweat, but it’s not the sweat that causes the unpleasant smell. Rather, the smell is the result of bacterial activity breaking down various organic materials within the sweat. That said, it’s completely understandable why sweat leads to a feeling of discomfort; it interferes with our social interactions and plays mind games with us, adversely affecting our sense of self-confidence.

What is Excessive Sweating?

We tend to sweat more when engaging in physical activity; it’s how our body regulates its temperature. But while sweating during intensive physical activity is natural, some people sweat more than average, even when in a resting state. Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, can also manifest as overly sweaty palms and feet.

There are several causes of excessive sweating, including biological and psychological causes. Sweating can result from various medical conditions, including thyroid issues and cancer. Many people who suffer from excessive sweating can effectively treat their condition by getting Botox injections. There’s no need to suffer from the discomfort and indignity caused by excessive sweating when an easy solution like Botox is available.

Anyone suffering from excessive sweating should seek medical help. It’s possible that the issue stems from a different condition that requires medical treatment.

Excessive Sweating – You’re Not Alone

It’s true that excessive sweating makes most people feel uncomfortable and embarrassed. It’s also true that most people don’t want to talk about this condition with their friends and family. That said, current medical literature indicates that roughly 3-10 percent of the population suffers from excessive sweating. Generally, the sweating is localized to one or more areas of the body, such as the palms of the hands or feet, or the underarms.

How is Excessive Sweating Treated?

In normal cases, we tend to counter sweat by applying deodorant that neutralizes the body’s odor. However, this does not prevent the body from sweating, and it is only meant to be used in the underarms. As such, it doesn’t really provide a solution for people suffering from excessive sweating. The most effective treatment for excessive sweating involves injecting botulinum toxin (Botox) into the excessively sweaty area. Botox can also be used in other aesthetic treatments, such as in Botox facial treatments

Botox is the preferred treatment for excessive sweating, by physicians and patients alike. Botox is safe and commonly used by physicians in medical and aesthetic applications, including to prevent sweating.

The Advantages of Botox for Excessive Sweating

  • Treatments are short – just 15 minutes!
  • Treatments are painless – Anesthetic cream is applied to relieve any injection-related discomfort.
  • No significant side effects – At most, patients experience minor burst blood vessels and local swelling, at the injection sites. These side effects disappear within a few days, without requiring any treatment.
  • Rapid results – Improvements can be felt within a few days of receiving treatment. Full effects are experienced after two weeks.
  • Long-lasting results – The effects of Botox injections for excessive sweating last for several months (6-9), after which the Botox is broken down in the body and the treatment can be repeated.
  • No post-treatment limitations – Patients can immediately return to their daily lives. The only recommendation is not to use deodorant for 24 hours, to prevent irritating the area.
  • Extremely effective – Botox injections can reduce sweating by 70-90 percent.

What is Botox?

It’s known to the public as Botox, but its scientific name is botulinum toxin. This toxin was first identified in the 19th century; back then, its potential was already clearly understood. That said, scientists only succeeded in isolating it for the first time in 1928, and its mechanisms of action and ability to block acetylcholine receptors were discovered even later. Receptor blocking essentially pauses biological activity in certain areas of the body for a limited time; in our case, excessive sweating.

Towards the end of the 1980s, the toxin was approved by the FDA. Physicians began to use it in a variety of treatments. Botox is the commercial name given to the substance by one of the brands. Although several brands market the same substance under different names, like Dysport, Botox is the widely accepted “generic” name today.

Botox isn’t the Only Treatment for Excessive Sweating, but it is the Most Recommended.

There are other ways to treat excessive sweating. These include a surgical procedure, during which the nervous tissue connecting the sympathetic nervous system to the sweat glands is removed. These types of treatments come with significant side effects; they can damage nerves linked to the reproductive organs, and cause compensatory sweating (excess sweating in other areas of the body). Other side effects include changes to one’s sense of taste, dryness in the hands, and increased sensitivity to cold. Other complications can occur, but they are rare. As such, it’s clear why this isn’t the recommended course of treatment.

Over the years, many clinical trials have been held, including those employing radio waves and laser treatments. However, no other treatment has been proven more effective or with fewer side effects than Botox.

How much do Botox injections for excessive sweating cost? The price varies, depending on which areas of the body are treated. Botox injections into the underarms cost 3,000-4,000 NIS, while injections into the palms of the hands cost 7,000-8,000 NIS.

No More Shame!

There’s nothing pleasant about excessive sweating. Those who suffer from excessive sweating are embarrassed to shake hands, making it harder for them to socialize. They tend to carry changes of clothes with them, and suffer from body odor. Excessive sweating can also adversely impact intimate relationships and quality of life. No one is immune to suffering from excessive sweating! The condition is even common among many celebrities

The good news is that you don’t have to suffer, anymore. You can easily treat your excessive sweating with Botox injections. It’s fast and simple.
